    Those with jobs in HVAC might often perform the following services:

    • Install heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems
    • Diagnose problems in heating and cooling systems
    • Sell contracts to clients
    • Follow blueprints
    • Manage air ducts, electrical wiring, and fuel and water supply lines

    An HVAC career requires technicians to work wherever a climate-controlled environment is required, including homes, office buildings, and factories.(1)

    What is the outlook for jobs in HVAC?

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, HVAC and Refrigeration Installers and Mechanics are projected to experience employment growth of 14 percent from 2014 to 2024--much faster than the national average for all occupations.(2) Job prospects should be especially strong for HVAC Technicians with formal training.

    HVAC diploma programs are required by some states and can take anywhere from six months to two years to complete. Programs generally include residential and commercial heating and cooling, refrigeration and freezers, air quality standards, air conditioning, evaporators, condensers, and compressors.(2)

    Is licensing required for HVAC careers?

    Some HVAC training programs, like HVAC diploma programs at Remington College, also prepare students for state licensing exams. Licensing requirements for HVAC technicians vary greatly, but all states require those working with refrigerants to be certified in their proper use and handling.(2)
